When I lost my dog last year, I lost my best friend. I missed her terribly. The charity helped me regain routine, companionship, and the joy of giving a shelter dog a home.”

A chrity that makes a big difference to the lives of many older people

Give a Dog a Bone…and an animal a home is a unique Scottish charity focused on two issues at once: loneliness in older adults and homelessness for rescue animals.

Founded in 2013, the charity supports people over 60 by removing financial barriers that might stop them from adopting a rescue pet, including help with rehoming fees and ongoing pet food costs. Its aim is simple but powerful: the person gains friendship and routine, while the animal gains a safe and loving home.

Alongside this, the charity runs community spaces offering free activities, drop-in sessions, companionship dogs, therapy treatments and opportunities for people to connect over a cuppa and a chat. Their wider work is built around kindness, compassion and community, helping older adults feel less isolated and more supported while giving rescue animals a brighter future.

Find out about Give a Dog a Bone

Give a Dog a Bone was founded in 2013 by Louise Russell after she recognised two growing problems: loneliness among older adults and the number of animals in rescue shelters.

She created the charity to bring the two together, helping older people gain companionship while giving rescue animals loving homes and a brighter future. Watch the video to find out more.
